A) READING COMPREHENSION
Mr Ledbetter´s Vacation based on a story by H.G. Wells

I´m a writer and I want to tell you a little story. This is about my friend, Mr Ledbetter. Heis a little man, with a round face and big glasses, always firm and correct. He is very formal and talks in a very serious way and with many details. His conversation is not interesting. People don´t understand very much our relationship, because I am just the opposite. But this is because they do not know his past and the link between us in the past.
It happened twenty years ago. In those days I was living in Jamaica, and Mr Ledbetter was a schoolmaster in England. Everything began at Hithergate on Sea with Mr Ledbetters´s summer vacation. After dinner, one day, he had a conversation with a talkative man who was at this hotel. There are no more adventures these days, said the man. Security is the most important thing now, he said; the burglar is the only adventurer on earth these days.
It was late at night and Mr Ledbetter went out for a walk in the village. While he was walking, he remembered the man´s words about the burglar. I need a little adventure in my life, but ....I´m not a criminal!he thought. Just then, he saw a balcony and an open window. The night was very quiet. Suddenly, he took a decision: he went up to the balcony and went into the house. He was in a big bedroom now, and was trembling violently. Was the house empty? What did burglars do? They stole things. But...he only wanted adventure! He heard footsteps. He was petrified. What a fool I have been! he said, and went under the bed.
Ledbetter only saw the man´s boots. What am I going to do? What are they going to do to me? I haven´t stolen anything, but technically, I´m a burglar he thought; I have committed a technical crime. After a time, he heard: chink, chink, chink...twenty five chinks. This chinking was the sound of gold. A lot of gold! He was curious. He moved his feet and the chinking stopped immediately. Mr Ledbetter became rigid. The man heard Mr Ledbetter and took him as a prisioner. That man was a bank burglar. It was midnight and he forced MrLedbetter to carry all the heavy bags with gold out of the house and then onto a ship with a lot of horrible and cruel men on it. They travelled for about twenty days. He was in a small room, with rats and cockroaches. Finally, Mr Bingham (that was thethief´s name) left Mr Ledbetter on an island. After some days, a fisherman found him and took him to St Vincent´s, and from there, he got to Kingston in Jamaica. I met him there, in Jamaica. In that moment, I worked in an small hotel and he asked me for help. I gave him a room, I had dinner with him so he told me the stoery. I gave him some money so he could return to England. After some time I received a a letter from England and my money back. He said that I was the kindest person in his life. Thanks to your help, I got my job back and the respect of the people. But they want to know where I have been all this time and I can´t tell the true story. That villain Bingham was the Hithergate bank manager, and guilty of a big fraud. I have consulted many law books and it is clear that I have been assistant in a crime. And how I can explain my presence in that house? Can you help me?...
